Brain Imaging by
Dr. Jonathan Kennedy Dementia Research Centre
These three pictures are MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans from three different individuals. They show a section through the brain about half way back.
The first scan shows how the normal brain looks.
The second scan is taken from someone with semantic dementia. Note the more marked atrophy (shrinking, due to loss of brain cells) of the left hand side of the brain particularly affecting the left temporal lobe (the bottom right of the picture). This part of the brain is heavily involved in knowledge of things and language in keeping with the symptoms seen with this problem.
The third scan shows someone with Alzheimer’s disease. There has been loss of cells all over the brain rather than the focal loss of cells seen in FTLD.
