TRAVEL

Make sure that all parties have some awareness of the illness and that certain problems could occur e.g. airlines, coach drivers and tour guides. They will want to know there is going to be adequate supervision. Make sure travel sickness tablets are taken if required. If tablets are prescribed try a dummy run for example a coach trip when one can get off if necessary.

Toilets for the disabled can be a tremendous help. They are mostly locked and a key can be obtained from RADAR tel: 0207 250 3222 - you then follow instructions i.e. press 1 for key scheme 2 for list of key scheme facilities.....etc

DESCRIBING THE ILLNESS/TIPS FROM PETER BARTHOLAMEW

Never mention dementia always talk about Pick's Disease or Neurodegenerative illness when applying for any kind of help. When you need services and are not getting them get an offspring, preferably male to plead your cause.

AWARENESS CARDS

We have produced some nicely presented cards with the Pick’s logo and details on one side and the following information on the other: “This Person has a Brain Disease.  There may be problems with speech, behaviour and confusion.  Your help and patience would be appreciated.” To obtain these cards please contact the organisers

MEDIC ALERT

Medic Alert - Encouraging patients to wear a medical identification bracelet or neck pendant (Medic-Alert) should ensure that they receive rapid and appropriate medical or social care. Medic Alert Foundation 0207 833 3034

SMOKE ALARMS

Smoke Alarms are a sensible precaution for everyone but particularly when there is somebody with dementia in the house.  People with dementia often have a decreased sense of smell, which is a hazard.  Also carers are so tired that they may sleep more heavily and not be as aware to a potential problem.
